How to get the first image from a Wordpress post?

Suppose you have a very old WordPress website, and you needed to utilize the post thumbnail feature of WordPress. But had an entire archive of posts that would take too much time and effort to go through. For new posts, you can utilize the thumbnail feature. For old posts, you just want to use the first image it finds in the content for the thumbnail, or a default if none present.
